Project Proposal
My objective for my internship in March is to learn what lawyers do in their workplace every day, what it means to be a lawyer, and what type of law I would like to practice. I will be interning with Colorado Legal Services (CLS). This law firm is a statewide firm but I will be working specifically in the Durango branch. The CLS law firm has a mission, which is aiding people with low-income or people who cannot afford a lawyer. The branch in Durango only accepts people with income below a certain line or Native Americans.
My mentors are four women who run the law firm together and each woman had their own job in the law firm. Lindsay Marshall is one of my mentors and she is a managing attorney and Kim Shropshire is another one of my mentors and she is a staff attorney. As for my other mentors, I am not sure what they do yet. I hope each one of my mentors can teach me something different about being a lawyer, what they think it means to be a lawyer, and a lot of knowledge surrounding being a lawyer.
I would like to go to college and study law along with linguistics and eventually go on to be a successful lawyer. Being able to work in a law firm and be able to see what lawyers do on a day to day basis will help me decide if this is the career path I want to follow and what type of lawyer I would like to be.
For my project, my mentors would have asked me to complete a referral guide for their clients. This guide would focus on services in La Plata and Montezuma County- namely, housing, public benefits, and health care services. One of my mentors, Lindsay Marshall, told me that a lot of legal aid work is coordinating with other organizations and agencies that provide social services to clients. They would like me to update all their information because it is all outdated. Along with this I will get to sit in on applications and intakes and do some court observation.
I have done some research about necessary information regarding the law and what lawyers do, most of this research has been looking at pages and resources from the Colorado Legal Services website.
Luckily, I have not experienced any obstacles getting my research, so I am very excited to complete my internship and see if being a lawyer is the correct career path for me.
