Today was my last day at Colorado Legal Services. I put the finishing touches on the Referral Guide and then compiled it all into a three-ringed binder so that it was ready both for the LINK exhibition tomorrow and for their office for the future. I also received thank you flowers from my mentor which was great. And the best part about today is everyone in the office took me out to lunch to say thank you for all I have done... I felt very special throughout today. Thank you Colorado Legal Services for being such a great place to intern, I loved it here.
Today was a very calm day, nothing really happened and I didn't have to do much at all. All I did today was go through old files from 2003 to recycle all the paper in each file, they do this every year to make room for the new cases. Some cases I went through were VERY interesting, I read letters that a guy in jail wrote to his girlfriend... it was interesting to say the least. And other case were very boring to go through. But that was pretty much all my day consisted of.
Today I finished my LINK project, Kim and Kyla need to read over it and check it and then I will fix anything necessary and then it will be completely done. I then worked on my poster board for the LINK exhibition. And finally I got to spend the afternoon in court again, observing a housing rights case.
Today I started the day by sitting in the staff meeting for a little bit but then I got invited to go to court and observe a case. The case that I watched was about a relocation issue, were the two biological fathers of the two different kids refused to let the mom move to LA where she wanted to live. I spent the entire day watching this case except for an hour lunch break. I was really exciting and I really enjoyed it.
Today I spent the day at the senior center for a elder fair. I got to talk to people about CLS and look at all the things that the community has to offer older people. I also spent the day chatting with two of the people I work with about where I want to go to college and what I hope to do with my life. I also talking a lot about reading and of course The Walking Dead.
Today I had the day off, I had a nice relaxing day and occasionally worked on my LINK project. It was nice to have the day off.
Today I started off the day learning about and having a conversation regarding feminism, which was quite interesting. I then worked on my LINK project, finishing the housing rights and homelessness referral page. I started on the Native American Law page. I also did my mentor interview today which was fun and interesting.
Today I started the day off by getting some coffee from Starbucks, it was a great decision. Once I got to the CLS office, I started briefly working on my LINK project but then I spent most of the morning sitting in on a case. This case was a very interesting case compiled of a few different things: custody, sexual assault, and failure to parent. It was a very touchy subject and quite frankly also very sad. But I did learn a lot about how the laws of parenting, failure to parent, and custody works in the state of Colorado. I spent a little bit more time, after that, working on my LINK project which is close to being finished. I finished the day by creating fake petitions as examples for the exhibition, it was surprisingly fun.
Today I came in and started brainstorming what I want my exhibition visual to look like and how I want to present what I am learning here. I came up with the idea to create a poster-board with all the information regarding Colorado Legal Services, along with what I learned in my three weeks, why I still want to be a lawyer and how CLS helped me come to that conclusion, and telling everyone what type of law I want to study and peruse. Another really cool thing that I might be able to add is the visual of an actual case or a made up case that could potentially be real. Along with all this, I got to sit in on their staff meeting again and got to hear all the new case and which ones they are going to take, update on all the ongoing or old cases, and some gossip. Finally, Libby came in to visit me today and got to see everything that I have been doing and everything that I still plan to do or complete. My mentor Lindsay, Libby, and I all had a nice little chat about everything. :) Tonight I got to spend 2 hours at the Pro-Se Divorce and Custody Clinic that CLS puts on every month. Although I am not getting divorced, I did learn quite a bit about how marriage laws and custody laws work. It was also really great that I attended this because I plan to peruse a career in family law, which is a lot of divorce and custody/child stuff. I really enjoyed learning all of that information but I realized once it was over that if and when I get married, I am never getting a divorce because it is way to much work and it comes with a ton of paperwork.
Today I finished working on the Health Issues portion of my referral guide for my LINK project. I then made some more copies for one of the attorneys bankruptcy case. A lady came into the office and told me that pursuing a career in law is great because you get to help people who cant help themselves and then she told me about Navajo Law which is surprisingly very interesting and cool. I spent the rest of my day reading and skimming some of the Colorado Statutes, which was pretty interesting.
