Sense of Place Essay
Visual Piece
Artist Statement:
My collage shows my biographical and rootedness sense of place, Sweden, in both the city and the countryside. I want to show everyone the difference but similarity between the two, the beauty and idyllic quality. The photographs that are placed higher on the board to show the extraordinary place that both Stockholm and Roksta, Sweden is. I want everyone to see this magical and pastoral country. I want people to feel the happiness, joy, and peacefulness I feel when I look at these pictures. I thought this was the best way to do it.

Reflection:
For this project we learned what environmental ethics are, what our definition of environmental ethics are, and how they relate to our sense of place. We first read a few papers written by Abby, showing his environmental ethic so that we could see his ethics and how he wrote it using descriptive language and the Grand Style. We all had to complete an Inspiration Journal filled with different assignments that would help us learn how to write about the environment around us and even help us with our essay. Another major thing we did was do a mock town debate about the Pinon Ridge Mill, each having different sides to take. After all of this preparation, we started our sense of place essays. We had to choose and place and write about it using descriptive language and involving our environmental ethic. With our essay we had to create a visual piece that showcased the same idea and things as the essay.
Throughout this project I think I grew the most in the area of refinement. I was beyond excited to write about my sense of place: Sweden, because I have such strong feelings of love and admiration of this city. But my essay started out as only personal stories and memories I have from my trips to Sweden, it wasn’t even close to what I was supposed to be doing other than having descriptive language and the Grand Style here and there. My first piece of refinement I made to this essay was after peer critique, the two people who critiqued mine told me to go more in depth with showing my feelings toward my place so that the reader could feel it too. After that refinement I felt like my paper was getting closer to showing my sense of place. Then Jessica critiqued my paper and told me to go a lot deeper with my environmental ethics and to show more of the present time Sweden. Once I made these changes and refinements I knew my paper was there and showcased exactly what I wanted it to. But I had one last little critique from Jessica and tweaked a few little things and finally it was finished. Because of all the critiques and refinement my essay went through, I feel like I definitely grew as a person and a writer.
In both my essay and my visual piece, I am proudest of how I show my love for this place and how I describe the beauty and idyllic qualities of Sweden using descriptive language and the Grand Style. In my visual piece, I think that I did really well in the categories of integration and perspective because all the pictures in my collage go together really well and go with my essay and the descriptions just as good. Because the pictures are of sweden and specifically the two places I talk about, I think that the perspective is accurate and good as well. As for my essay, I think that I show my sense of place to the best of my ability using a lot of descriptive language and elements of nature writing. For example: “The buildings were so tiny from above but stood tall as if they were proud to belong there. The water below looked like magic, sparkling from the sunlight, and the rivers zigzagged everywhere. The tiny boats hugged the shoreline as though they never wanted to leave. And as we circled this city, I fell in love with traveling and the idea of this foreign place, the foreign people, and this foreign culture.”
I really enjoyed both the Humanities and Chemistry parts of this project, but separately because I don’t really think that they went together very well, which I thought was ok. Chemistry did help the humanities a little bit during the research and learning portion just not anything else. Overall I really enjoyed both sides to this project because I was really excited to debate and I was really excited to write my sense of place essay. During the research and learning points of these projects the two classes sort of complemented each other but only slightly. I think that my perspective on both of the essential questions stayed the same but my ideas were brought forward and expanded throughout this project.
